Thanks to all who came out for the grand opening celebrations for Dot Art's Clay Station Studio and The Dot-2-Dot Cafe on Saturday, June 28. A good crowd welcomed Mayor Menino as he cut the ceremonial ribbon at both establishments - The Clay Station at 1782 Dorchester Ave. (at the corner of Shepton Street), and the Dot-2-Dot at 1739 Dorchester Ave. (just south of St. Mark's Church). It's fitting that these two ventures held their grand openings on the same day, because they've been helping each other out since they opened earlier this year: The Dot-2-Dot displays artwork by Dot Art graduates, and Clay Station students made the dazzling tile display that adorns the Dot-2-Dot's storefront.
The much-anticipated Dot-2-Dot opened in May. Owner Karen Henry-Garrett, a Cordon-Bleu-trained chef and local resident, serves up everything from coffee & pastries to cuisines from around the world, in a menu that changes daily. The Dot-2-Dot also provides catering for office meetings and parties.
A cafe has always been one of SMAMS' top priorities, and the Dot-2-Dot made the wait worthwhile! We were honored to help with site selection, zoning and storefront renovation.
With plenty of seating, free wi-fi access, and exhibits of local artwork, the Dot-2-Dot is destined to become a true community center as well as a place to grab a bite. Stop in for a visit (7:00 AM - 7:00 PM Tuesday - Friday, 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM weekends), and you'll soon be a regular! For more information, call the Dot-2-Dot at 617-436-2368.
The Clay Station, which opened in January, is a ceramics studio providing classes for people of all ages, as well as space for aspiring and professional artists to work. The Clay Station is the only studio of its kind in Dorchester, housing pottery wheels, classroom space and a glazing station, as well as exhibition space for original work made in the studio.
Dot Art plans to make The Clay Station, named for its location mid-way between Shawmut and Ashmont Stations on the MBTA Red Line, an easily recognizable fixture on the Avenue, and a welcoming home to artists of all ages and skill levels. For more information, please call Dot Art at 617-265-3503.
